Missouri River Management:
 It's Everybody's Business

May 21 - 24, 2000
Radisson Inn
Bismarck - North Dakota

Since 1997, the Missouri River Natural Resources Conference has provided a yearly opportunity for people in the basin to learn about the river’s environmental condition and share points of view on river management.

The conference theme, Missouri River Management: It’s Everybody’s Business, acknowledges that everyone has a stake in how the river is managed and encourages participation by people with diverse river interests. This is the 4th annual conference; previous conferences were held in Columbia, Missouri (1997), Nebraska City, Nebraska (1998), and Pierre, South Dakota (1999).

Bismarck, North Dakota is located on the Missouri River immediately above the Lake Oahe headwaters. Lake Oahe is the 4th largest reservoir in the United States. It is 231 miles long and extends from Bismarck to Pierre, South Dakota. Garrison Dam is north of Bismarck and creates Lake Sakakawea.

The 75-mile river reach between Lake Sakakawea and Lake Oahe, known as the Garrison Reach, is rich in natural and cultural history. Near Washburn, present day site of the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery built Fort Mandan for their winter quarters in 1804-5 and learned from the native Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara peoples how to survive the often brutal winters. Fort Lincoln is the last home of General George Custer.

Today’s management questions include sediment buildup in the headwaters of Lake Oahe, bank stabilization, and flood plain development. Field trips provide an opportunity to see the history as well as management challenges facing the people in the Garrison Reach.
